PlayADK is a state-of-the art children’s museum in Saranac Lake, NY designed to promote children’s health by fostering child-driven exploration and play and resources for families with young children. The project will transform an historic warehouse and industrial site into a 14,000 square foot facility with exhibits located in the building and on the grounds. The warehouse and its surroundings offers a unique opportunity to establish an interactive play-space and museum for young children, their families and all Saranac Lake residents and visitors. The existing warehouse is a two-story steel-framed kit, shipped in by train and assembled on site to support Saranac Lake’s early 20th Century building boom. In repurposing the warehouse, the kit-of-parts character will be preserved, providing a unique spatial experience - a giant play-structure which stimulates visitors’ imagination and creative spirit. The original exterior metal panels, steel roof planks and modular steel frame will be preserved and revealed. New exit stairs are envisioned as colorful exterior elements. The main entry, lobby, and stair will be a brightly lit, translucent element, welcoming visitors into a fully configured and equipped play-based space and children’s museum. Premises assisted the client by providing existing building analysis, space needs analysis, architectural programming, concept and schematic design, and construction budget development. Project deliverables included schematic site plan and architectural drawings, and the creation of presentation materials for use in fundraising campaigns. PlayADK was recently awarded a nearly $1M grant from New York State in association with the Saranac Lake Downtown Revitalization Initiative.
